7 things to bring to the Architecture College & Career Expo this Saturday

If you’re going to be anywhere near Los Angeles this Saturday, September 29, go to USC for the Architecture College & Career Expo (If you’re anywhere near Atlanta on October 27, you can check it out at GIT).

Schedule of Events
10:00 a.m. Student Registration
10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. “Portfolio Development” with Special Guest Speaker Harold Linton
12:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. School Exhibit Hall Open
1:30 p.m.-2:15 p.m. “Selecting an Architecture Program”
2:30 p.m.-3:15 p.m. “A Day in the Life of an Architect” panel discussion

Seven things to bring with you:

1. Bring your portfolio! This is your chance to introduce yourself and find out who’s who at your favorite schools.

2. Bring a list of questions before you go so that you don’t forget to find out everything that you want to know.

3. Bring an open mind. Maybe you’ll find the perfect school…and maybe it’s a school you hadn’t considered before.

4. Bring a professional attitude. Of course.

5. Bring you smile. This often gets underused in our email-centric lives, but it can really help you in your face-to-face contacts.

6. Bring a pen (or two!) and a writing pad - or your Blackberry. You’re going to want to take notes, not only for the presentations and panel discussion, but also to take note of people that you meet, along with a sentence or two to help you remember who they were when you get home. Always build bridges because you’ll never know when you’ll want to cross one.

7. Bring $7 to park on campus.

Hi. My name is Katy. I like it when you write to me and tell me about the cool stuff you're doing in architecture. Yes, I write back.* I may publish your letter and my reply on the blog. If you don't want me to do that, you can just ask that I withhold your name, or if you're really serious about keeping your letter a secret, you can ask me to just not publish it at all. Of course I'll still write back to you. * I hope you'll take this opportunity to share your thoughts with our worldwide audience.

places where you could probably learn more about designing and building in just a few days than I did after a year of grad school

Know of some others I can add here? Let me know. Have you already visited some of these places...or planning on it? Let me know and I will feature your story and your photos here!

I am starting a new kind of architecture school. Unlike most architecture schools, you wouldn't have to submit GRE scores or good grades or letters of recommendation. You wouldn't have to put the rest of your life on hold for 3 to 5 years. You wouldn't have to accrue tens of thousands of dollars in debt. At my architecture school, anyone could come for a few weeks and learn how to build a house with their own two hands. My teachers would take skills and concepts from some of these other workshops I've listed above... except classes would be held year-round to make it easy to fit into your schedule. I would have a number of different campuses around the country that would teach building designs appropriate to the local climate. And I need your help. Can you donate land for a campus? Can you dotate books for a library? Can you teach a workshop? Can you provide start-up capital? Let me know.
